We were lucky enough to have a great adopting experience when working with a breeder here in Portugal, but not every dog owner will be able to have the same luck.
We don’t have many organizations devoted to rescues here, so this was a great option to get our Sami.
In the US, however, there are so many Westies that need to find loving homes.
Often, you can make a kinder choice by choosing to adopt a dog that needs to be rehomed through a rescue organization rather than buying from a breeder.
When it comes to Westie rescue California has many different groups that are available to help you find a new home for a Westie in need or to find a Westie of your very own.
Today, we’re covering some important info about rescues working in California.
These organizations each have their own mission, but they all have the common goal of helping to save Westies in need.
Isn’t that wonderful? Let’s get to know them!
Westie Rescue California Organizations
1. Westie Rescues of California
The first group to talk about today is Westie Rescues of California.
This group focuses on a wide range of services for Westie owners, Westies that need to be rehomed, and those that are interested in helping Westies.
Those services include:
- Educating the public about Westies
- Helping Westies in need to find homes
- Rescuing Westies
- Setting up foster homes
- Rehabilitating Westies
- Training Westies
- Researching terriers
- Finding forever homes for Westies
It’s so awesome to see one organization taking on so many amazing jobs in their state, and there is no doubt in our minds that this group has made a big difference in the communities they work in.
The primary goal of this organization is to rescue, foster, and rehome Westies that are abused, neglected, abandoned, relinquished, or otherwise homeless.
While they only work in California at this time, they have organizations that they work closely with that are located in New Mexico, Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada.
2. Westie Rescue and Placement: NorCal
The next group’s work is focused in Northern California, the Westie Rescue and Placement NorCal.
While their geographic area might be limited, the effect that they have on dogs that they encounter isn’t any less than in other areas.
This particular center has been working since 2016, and its ultimate goal is to save Westies that may otherwise be euthanized from local shelters.
The dogs that they work with, however, don’t just come from shelters.
They also take in strays, abandoned, and surrendered Westies that need their help.
When working with Westies, this group is very careful to make sure that their placement is done properly.
They handle any potential adoptions with great care, working with potential owners to ensure that they know all that they need to know about properly caring for Westies.
The organization sets all Westies-in-need up with a reliable foster volunteer while they are waiting for the right forever home.
This service allows them the luxury of being able to fully vet and research those that are interested in adopting the Westies.
Through this method, they have a high rate of successful private adoptions.
3. Westie Rescue of Orange County and Beyond
The “and Beyond” in the title of the Westie Rescue of Orange County and Beyond’s name is very interesting because this group actually works in all of California to ensure that every Westie in the state is given the love and support that they need.
The major goal of this organization is to help lost, abandoned, neglected, abused, and otherwise unwanted Westies find their forever homes where they will be loved and cared for in the way that they should be.
One of the specialties that this center focuses on is rehabilitating Westies that have developed problematic behaviors or conditions that might make it difficult for them to be successfully rehomed.
Often, these behaviors are caused by neglect or abuse in a previous home, so the group works patiently with the dogs.
This organization also puts a lot of time into working with Westies that have hard-to-handle medical problems.
Even Westies that have large or chronic health problems are taken in by this program, and that shows just how much they care.
Just as they care a lot about making sure that the Westies are safe and in good condition once they are in the care of the rescue, they put just as much care into ensuring that everyone who applies to adopt a Westie is a qualified and reliable owner.
This vetting process ensures the safety of the pups once they leave the rescue’s care.
