Naming a westie is one of the first decisions you’ll make as a new owner, and it sticks for the next 12-16 years. The name needs to work when you’re calling them in from the yard, when you’re at the vet, and when you’re telling them – for the 400th time – to stop barking at the mailman.
We named our westie Sami. Short, easy to call, and it suited him from day one. No elaborate reasoning behind it – Miruna liked the name, it felt right, and seven years later it still fits his personality perfectly.
Names That Work for Westies
A few things to consider: one or two syllables work best for recall training. Dogs respond better to names that are distinct from common commands (avoid names that sound like “sit,” “stay,” “no,” or “come”). And westies have big personalities in small bodies – a name with a little character tends to suit them better than something delicate.
Scottish-Inspired Names
Westies are a Scottish breed, originally from the western Highlands. Scottish names honor that heritage:
Angus, Bonnie, Hamish, Isla, Fergus, Skye, Lachlan, Fiona, Brodie, Nessie, Duncan, Ailsa, Callum, Maisie, Fraser, Elspeth, Finlay, Iona
Names Inspired by Their White Coat
The white coat is the westie’s most distinctive feature. Some owners lean into it:
Snowball, Blanco, Casper, Pearl, Marshmallow, Coconut, Ghost, Ivory, Cotton, Frost, Vanilla, Cloud, Bianca, Alba, Luna, Storm
Names That Match the Personality
Westies are confident, stubborn, curious, and full of opinions. Names that capture that energy:
Rebel, Boss, Dash, Pepper, Scout, Rascal, Jinx, Trouble, Ziggy, Rocket, Biscuit, Whiskey, Bandit, Pixie, Gizmo, Tank
Classic Dog Names That Suit Westies
Nothing wrong with a straightforward name that just works:
Max, Bella, Charlie, Daisy, Buddy, Molly, Teddy, Rosie, Archie, Lucy, Alfie, Poppy, Toby, Ruby, Oscar, Millie
Female Westie Names
Popular picks for girl westies: Bella, Daisy, Poppy, Rosie, Molly, Luna, Maisie, Bonnie, Isla, Fiona, Ruby, Pixie, Skye, Ivy, Willow, Pearl

How We Chose “Sami”
We didn’t overthink it. Miruna wanted a short name that was easy to say and that we wouldn’t get tired of repeating a dozen times a day (because with a westie, you will repeat their name a dozen times a day). Sami fit. He responded to it immediately, and it suits his personality – friendly, warm, a little bit cheeky.
My advice: pick a name you genuinely like saying out loud. You’re going to say it thousands of times. Test it by standing in your living room and calling it as if your dog just stole something off the counter. If it feels natural in that moment, it’s the right name.
A Few Naming Tips
Decide before the puppy comes home. Consistency from day one helps with early training.
Avoid names that sound like commands. “Kit” sounds like “sit.” “Joe” sounds like “no.” “Shay” sounds like “stay.” Your westie is already going to pretend they can’t hear commands – don’t give them a legitimate excuse.
If you’re getting your westie from a breeder, they may have already given the puppy a registered name. You don’t have to use it. The registered name is for paperwork. The call name is what you actually use, and it can be whatever you want.
